Quibbletown Bitches

Part 9

by Joseph B. Gentzel

Quibbletown Queeka Bear

Quibbletown Queeka Bear was an all white bitch whelped March 30, 1966. Her Sire is Champion Quibbletown Impresario. Her Dam is Quibbletown Party Girl. She has a coefficient of Inbreeding of 21.25%. You can find extensive information about Champion Quibbletown Impresario in Part 4.

Quibbletown Party Girl is a full sister to:

Champion Quibbletown Glory Be
Champion Quibbletown Jim Dandy
Quibbletown Nero The Great
Champion Quibbletown Merry Maker
Champion Quibbletown Leo the Lion

A three generation Pedigree follows:

Ch. Lorvaso de la Colina

Champion Quibbletown Impresario

Quibbletown April Sunshine

Quibbletown Queeka Bear

Champion Quibbletown Good Time Charlie

Champion Quibbletown Party Girl

Champion Quibbletown Ariette

Seaver told me many years ago ring side the first time he saw our Harvey AKA Champion Karolaskas Captivator, that Queeka Bear was possibly the greatest brood bitch in the history of the breed. I had no understanding at the time why this might be true, but here is what the computer tells us. Queeka is the result of the two premier stud sons of Champion Lorvaso de la Colina, i.e. Champion Quibbletown Impresario and Champion Quibbletown Good Time Charlie. When we do a gene search on Queeka we find the following contributions from the primary gene contributors:

Lorvaso de la Colina 43.75%
Lawrence of Combermere 22.65%
Ibos du Val d'Aure 19.73%

WOW!!! In all the research I have done to date I have not encountered another Quibbletown dog with this percentage of influence from these most important dogs. This is certainly the best of the best in Great Pyrenees breeding circles. Makes you wonder what happened to Queeka's full siblings? We will see later.

Quibbletown Queeka Bear is the foundation bitch at Karolaska. She and Balibasque Beau of Karolaska, C.D. were the two dogs that Carol and Rick Kentopp got as they were moving from North Carolina to Alaska. Seaver tells me that Carol Kentopp consulted with Edith extensively regarding her breeding program, especially in the early days.

Queeka was bred to two dogs, Balibasque Beau of Karolaska, C.D. and Champion Quibbletown Sock It To Em. It looks like she was bred two times to each stud. The first litter was born June 20, 1967 by Balibasque Beau of Karolaska, C.D. This litter included Champion Karolaska Polar Nero and Champion Karolaska Polar Bonnie Bear. The next litter by the same Sire, was born December 24, 1967 and produced Champion Karolaska Glacier and Champion Irena Alexandra Baranovna. There were other get in both litters that are quite important to our contemporary bloodlines.

The next breeding I have a record with offspring is on October 18, 1969 by Champion Quibbletown Sock It To Em. This breeding was repeated with get whelped September 17, 1970. From the first breeding we get one of the all time great stud dogs in the breed, Karolaska's Kuskokwim Kid and from the second we get one of the top brood bitches in contemporary breed history, Karolaska Trudie Fair. I do not think it any oversimplification to say that the outcross with Balibasque Beau produced exquisite get that excelled in the show ring and the line breeding with Quibbletown Sock It To Em, AKA Clyde, produced the stud dogs and brood bitches that was used to perpetuate the line. Keep in mind that each produced some dogs that achieved success in the other area, but the evidence on close analysis is quite clear in support of the above statement. I have not asked Seaver but I would not be surprised if Edith had some influence on this last match up i.e. Clyde and Queeka. Excepting Quibbletown, Karolaska was arguably, along with Tip'N Chip, the premier breeding kennel for about ten or fifteen years in North America. Both Tip'N Chip and Karolaska were very rich in Quibbletown blood. Few kennels achieved the success that Karolaska achieved both in the show ring and whelping box When you look at subsequent generations of the Karolaska line you find the dogs that gave the most success were always very rich in Quibbletown blood.

I will list each offspring of Queeka that I have a record, as this is important stuff in North American Pedigrees:

Quibbletown Queeka Bear bred to:

Balibasque Beau of Karolaska. C.D.

Champion Karolaska Polar Bonnie Bear
Champion Karolaska Polar Nero
Champion Karolaska Glacier
Champion Irina Alexandra Baranova

We now find dogs with Karolaska in virtually every contemporary Pedigree in North America. All this started from Queeka Bear and was intensified with Clyde shortly thereafter. I will list Kennels that include Quibbletown Queeka Bear in its lineage.

Caspyr Kaskadian Euzkotar Maranatha
Schnee Bar VilleVieux Baleklif Charbonneau
Belle Ami Aneto Four Oaks Tresors
Shadowrun Snowbear Pyr Haven Maleen's
Winterwood Summerhill Mantu Almac
Marais Revere Neigerie Galen
Jenstin Trottenfox Tip'N Chip Pyramis

Mistry Huny Mtn Dastekde Black Hut
Northern Star Chapter's Euzkalzale Whitehope
Pyrport Balibasque C and L's Bousy Rouge
Shandee Hill Many others

Lets look at exactly how important Queeka Bear is to some of the primary breeding stock in some of the above Kennels. The foundation stud dog at Euzkotar, Karolaska Kaskabar Euzkotar is a maternal grandson of Queeka and Queeka therefore has a 25% gene influence. American and Canadian Champion Euskari's Kaskadian Everstar is a great great granddaughter of Queeka through her mother Euzkotar Yturri de Kari, whose sire is the dog above, Karolaska Kaskabar Euzkotar. Caspyr through Champion Kaskadian Shaniko,C.D. have two of the top bitches of today in Champion Caspry's Love Lady Love and Champion Caspyr's Victoria Secret Echo. The foundation bitch or at least one of the most important bitches in the early days of Pyr Haven was American and Canadian Champion Karolaska Angel of Pyr Haven, a Queeka great great granddaughter. Angel's offspring have made major contributions to both Tip'N Chip and Summerhill and I am sure others as well. Queeka is a great great grandmother three times for Champion Pyrson K'laska of Summerhill, with a gene influence of 18.75%. Queeka is the Grandmother of Champion Sunshine of Karolaska, one of the very important stud dogs and a top show dog in the breed, at VilleVieux. I could go on for a long time, but it is evident that Quibbletown Queeka Bear very important to contemporary breeding.

The top producer descendant list continues to expand in subsequent generations.

The point is that Quibbletown Queeka Bear is, as Seaver told me that day in September, 1976, one of the most influential brood bitches in the history of the breed. She delivered both winners and producers. This is a testament to her genetic makeup. She was the result of about 35 years of breeding by Edith and Seaver Smith. Generally, the outcross get were some of the greatest show dogs in the history of the breed. The linebred get are responsible for much of the top contemporary dogs till even today.

I show one litter sister to Quibbletown Queeka Bear, Quibbletown Suzette Soloman. There are many descendants important to Soleil, Vala, Skeel, Ripples, Whispering Pines, and Schnee Bar as a result of being bred to Champion Count Athos of Ralfran's C.D. Remember him as one of the descendant get of Champion Quibbletown Lee of Ralfrans by Champion Quibbletown Windsor we did in Part 7. When Quibbletown Suzette Soloman was bred to Champion Quibbletown Sock It To Em the lone descendant in my records that resulted is a bitch named Quibbletown Masked Lady. Her descendants include:

Champion VilleVieux Le Roi
Champion Rolling Hills Keep the Faith
Champion VilleVieux Daphne
Champion Quibbletown Double Time

Arguably the most famous get of Queeka is Champion Karolaska Glacier, followed closely by his full siblings, Champion Karolaska Polar Nero and Champion Karolaska Polar Bonnie Bear.

Seaver and Edith Smith owned Glacier during much of his show career that was record breaking for its time. Seaver told me that Glacier started his show career at the Hatboro PA show in late 1971 and it ended exactly 3 years later, 1974, at the same show, with Glacier being excused for limping. Glacier was dead three weeks later from bone cancer. Over this three year period being shown essentially every week, he was defeated in the breed only 8 times and one time was for limping at his last show. I want to quote for you what his breeder, Carol Kentopp of Karolaska, had to say about him some years later in an interview. Carol Kentopp says:

Seaver Smith with Champion Karolaska Glacier on a show circuit

"I think the best moving dog we've had was Glacier. Its hard to describe his movement- when you saw him, he didn't move like most Pyrenees. He was very light on his feet for that size of dog. He had a tremendous driving rear without over driving his front. He was just a really nice moving dog; a powerful mover. I guess what I've seen that moved like him would be a good moving Malamute. In spite of it all, he was extremely light on his feet; he had tremendous kickback. He had good reach in the front that matched the kickback. I think he was probably the best moving Pyrenees. Of course, he had the attitude- he was out there like he was the King Pin. I think you have got to have that attitude to have a dog move well."(1)

Champion Karolaska Glacier's show record was as follows:

10 Best In Shows
56 Group Firsts
21 Group Seconds
26 Group Thirds
14 Group Fourths
2 Great Pyrenees Club of America National Specialty Best of Breeds
1 Golden Gate Specialty Best of Breed
1 Mid-Western Specialty Best of Breed
only defeated 8 times in three years

We need to note that in those days the Working Group and Herding Group were one group, the Working Group. It was a huge group that was more than competitive. It was very rare in those days for a Great Pyrenees to win any placement in the Working Group, ever.

Head study of Champion Karolaska Glacier

On a personal note Quibbletown Queeka Bear was a bitch Maryann and I were very aware as when we came into the breed in 1972, Glacier was making his record. He and his full brother, Karolaska Polar Nero were sensational dogs that had the whole country talking, exhibitors, breeders, and judges. They changed the course of the breed with their elegance coupled with the soundness seldom seen packaged together in such tremendous quality in the same dog. Quibbletown had been breeding these dogs for years, but these brothers had that undefinable quality sometimes called charisma. They were always noticed and for good reason. Remarkable animals very akin to the brothers Estat d'Argeles and Estagel d'Argeles that Edith and Seaver used as their phenotype template from the very beginning. Estat and Estagel were also the result of an outcross out of a tightly linebred Dam. Queeka was the Maternal Grandmother, through Karolaska Trudie Fair, of two of our dogs, Champion Karolaska Black-Eyed Susan and her litter brother, Champion Karolaska's Captivator. Wonderful dogs that left a void, still vacant in our hearts.
